Porsche Strut Tower Failure – How to Prevent it and Improve Handling Performance

Porsche GT models are built to be driven hard. However, one chassis weakness has become increasingly important to address on the 981, 718/982 and 991 platforms: front strut tower failure.

At Suspension Secrets, we have developed a proven solution to help prevent Porsche front strut tower failure before it becomes an expensive and potentially serious problem. Our Performance Strut Tower Protection Package combines our Front Camber Caster Plate Top Mounts with our Uprated Spring Cups to allow the car to run a lower ride height while retaining sufficient damper bump travel.

This helps prevent the damper bottoming out over kerbs and large compressions, reducing impacts to the chassis that can lead to front strut tower deformation or cracking, while also improving suspension geometry, steering feel and front-end grip.

For owners who want to protect their Porsche Cayman GT4 (981 and 718/982), GT4 RS (718/982) or 911 GT car (991) while also improving handling performance, this bolt-on package is an essential preventative upgrade that requires no bodywork modifications.

What Causes Porsche Strut Tower Failure?

The front strut towers are a critical part of the chassis structure. They provide the upper mounting point for the front suspension assembly and are responsible for transferring suspension loads from the damper and spring into the vehicle body.

On Porsche’s 981, 718/982 and 991 platforms, the front strut tower area forms part of the car’s aluminium body structure. Aluminium offers excellent stiffness and weight-saving benefits, which are important in high-performance Porsche GT models. However, it behaves differently to steel when exposed to repeated high-impact suspension loads. Instead of bending or deforming in a progressive way, aluminium can become stressed around concentrated load points and may eventually crack if those loads are not properly distributed.

On hard-driven Porsche GT models, front strut tower failure is often linked to reduced bump travel in the OEM front damper assembly when the car has been lowered. Lowering the chassis reduces the available compression travel in the damper. During large compressions, kerb strikes or heavy track use, the damper can bottom out, sending a sharp shock load directly through the damper piston, top mount assembly and into the front strut tower.

This shock loading can cause deformation, cracking or costly chassis damage around the front strut tower area. Rather than simply trying to strengthen the strut tower to withstand repeated shock loads, the more effective preventative approach is to address the cause of those loads by maintaining sufficient damper travel and preventing the damper from bottoming out.

Why do Porsche GT Models Suffer Failures

The Cayman GT4 (981 and 718/982), GT4 RS (718/982) and 911 GT models (991) generate extraordinary levels of front grip. This is one of the reasons they’re so rewarding to drive. However, it also means the suspension and chassis are exposed to exceptional loads.

The risk is increased further when these cars are lowered without correctly addressing front damper travel. On the OEM front dampers, lowering the chassis reduces the available bump travel. This means the damper has less compression travel available before it reaches the end of its stroke. On track, where the car is exposed to kerbs, compressions and repeated high-load impacts, this can cause the damper to bottom out and send a sharp load directly through the top mount and into the front strut tower.

For Porsche owners who regularly use their GT cars on circuit, the risk of strut tower failure is greater. Track driving exposes the car to multiple high load events above and beyond what is experienced during normal road use. This is why a preventative Porsche strut tower protection upgrade is a smart investment for owners who drive on track but want to preserve their car and avoid expensive repair work.

Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package.

The Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package

The Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package addresses the front strut tower failure issue affecting Porsche 981 Cayman GT4, 718/982 Cayman GT4, 718 GT4 RS and 991 GT models.

The package combines two key components:

  • Suspension Secrets Front Camber Caster Plate Top Mounts
  • Suspension Secrets Uprated Spring Cups

These components are designed to work together as a complete system. The Uprated Spring Cups must be paired with our Front Camber Caster Plate Top Mounts for the strut tower protection solution to work correctly.

When fitted as a package, the system allows the car to run a lower ride height while retaining sufficient bump travel in the OEM front damper. This helps prevent the damper from bottoming out over large compressions or kerbs, reducing the damaging shock loads that can otherwise be transferred through the top mount assembly and into the front strut tower.

Instead of simply reinforcing the strut tower to cope with the effects of damper bottoming, the Suspension Secrets package is designed to address the root cause of the problem.

Porsche camber plates.

Porsche Camber Plates

Central to this package is our Suspension Secrets Front Camber Caster Plate Top Mounts. These are precision-machined from billet 6082-T6 aluminium and designed to provide strength, accuracy and durability in demanding road and track environments.

Unlike the factory top mounts, our Porsche camber plates feature a large range of camber adjustment. This allows owners to apply geometry settings more suited to spirited road driving and track use. Dialling more negative camber into the front axle improves tyre contact with the road during fast driving, increasing grip level and cornering speeds.

Our Porsche top mount design also incorporates a fixed 2-degree increase in positive caster. This improves steering weight, high-speed stability and dynamic camber gain. In simple terms, the car feels more planted, more communicative and more confidence-inspiring.

For drivers who want better handling as well as increased protection from strut tower failure, Suspension Secrets top mounts are a major upgrade over the standard factory arrangement.

Porsche uprated spring cups.

Uprated Spring Cups for Bump Travel and Protection

The second part of the package is our Uprated Spring Cups. The spring cups work with our front camber plates to allow the car to run a lower ride height while retaining sufficient bump travel in the OEM damper. This is critical because reduced bump travel is one of the key reasons lowered, hard-driven Porsche GT models can suffer damper bottoming and strut tower shock loading.

By helping maintain usable damper travel, the Uprated Spring Cups reduce the risk of the damper reaching the end of its stroke during kerb strikes, heavy compressions or aggressive track use. This helps prevent the damaging load path that can lead to front strut tower deformation or cracking.

A Preventative Upgrade That Also Improves Handling

Many Porsche owners only become aware of strut tower failure once damage has already occurred. By that point, the repair can be expensive and disruptive. In some cases, the chassis may need specialist repair work, and the value of the car may be affected.

The Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package is designed to be fitted before this happens. It is a preventative upgrade that protects the car while also improving how it drives.

The increased camber adjustment provided by our package allows the front tyres to work more effectively during cornering, reducing outer shoulder wear and improving grip. The added caster improves steering feel and stability, making the car more predictable and confidence-inspiring at speed.

For trackday drivers, the benefits of our package are even more noticeable. Better geometry means more front grip, sharper response, and improved tyre performance and wear. For road users, the package improves your car’s durability and gives peace of mind while retaining everyday usability.

Compatible Porsche Models

The Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package is suitable for a range of affected Porsche models including:

Our package is also compatible with OEM dampers and PASM-equipped cars, making it a practical upgrade for owners who want to keep the original damper functionality while strengthening the front suspension mounting arrangement.

Protect Your Porsche

Porsche strut tower failure is a problem that should not be ignored, especially for owners who use their cars on track or drive them hard on the road. The Suspension Secrets Performance Strut Tower Protection Package provides a proven, engineered solution that helps prevent front strut tower failure before it becomes a costly issue.

By combining our billet aluminium camber plates with our spring cups, this package helps maintain OE damper bump travel at lower ride heights, reducing the risk of damper bottoming and the shock loading that can lead to strut tower failure. At the same time, it improves front-end geometry by allowing more negative camber and adding positive caster, increasing steering feel, front grip and handling performance.
